working in the cold

Winter is in full swing and many regions of the U.S. and Canada are experiencing frigid temperatures. Extremely cold weather is a dangerous situation that can cause occupational illness and injuries to employees who work outside. Recently while traveling to Canada and other parts of the U.S.  for speaking engagements, I experienced first hand people who had to work outside in these extreme cold conditions in order to provide services for me and others. In other words, if it were not for them, many of us would not be able to carry out our jobs or enjoy the basic services of our everyday lives.

While sitting on a plane before taking off to my destination and enjoying the warmth, I couldn’t help but notice so many airport employees who were outside in the frigid cold, making sure my bags were put on the plane, directing traffic, transporting goods and securing my safety.  The outside temperatures were closing in on single digits in extreme windy conditions.

This “Magic Minute” is dedicated to all the men and women who brave the cold each and every day and sacrifice their health and well being serving customers. To me that is magical.  Many people complain and fuss when it is this cold out, perhaps taking for granted that many workers have to subject themselves to these extreme temperatures  in order to just do their job.  Just think of the police, fire and all of the emergency staff, construction, maintenance and utility workers, school crossing guards, postal workers, fisherman, and the list goes on and on. If it weren’t for them we may not have the opportunity to create “magic moments” for our own customers.

So as we all try to get through this cold and snowy winter, take a moment to thank a person who is working outside in these extreme conditions.  Show your appreciation by buying them a cup of coffee, hot chocolate or by offering a simple thank you.  Create your own “magic moment”. It will make their day.  Let’s all be grateful for what they go through and have to do each and every day. How they continue to do it for all of us is truly Magical.

Always Wishing You Magical Success!
