When I work with my coaching clients or deliver leadership workshops, I often find that one aspect of Leadership that most find difficult and uncomfortable is dealing with employee performance problems.
However, we all know that delaying or not confronting nonperformers never works out well in the office or business. Let’s look at a tip from the book “The Leadership Secrets of Santa Claus” by Walk The Talk Company, that Santa has in his stocking to help us.

Santa’s Lesson- Find Out Who Is Naughty And Nice When Santa was a first time Leader in his workshop, he often, as many leaders do, dealt with performance issues by doing the following. 1. Overlook and not address the problem hoping that it would go away. 2. Send out a blanket memo to the entire team hoping that the problem employee will read it and get the message. 3. Continue to look for excuses to avoid a confrontation. 4. Finally confront the employee and unload the problem issue along with dumping a whole bunch of other issues that needed to be addressed. Can you imagine Santa dealing with his reindeer and elves this way today. Do you think all of those toys would be built correctly and delivered on Christmas Eve on time? What would the other workers at Santa’s workshop think when poor performers are not addressed? These same problems could be taking place in your business if nonperformance issues are not addressed quickly and fairly. Here are some of Santa’s coaching strategies that he uses to help his elves and reindeer avoid problems and do the best that they can.
There is no question that your elves and reindeer are depending on you just as you depend on them. Don’t let them down. Now that would be “Magical”! |
