Research continues to tell us that employees want and need to feel appreciated and recognized for their hard work and efforts. Being appreciated by an organization, whether it be by the boss or from peers, is crucial to a person feeling good about what they do at work and being more productive. It also contributes to being loyal to a business and reduces employee turnover.

Most people think that recognition is only for the most productive employees. This is not always true. A recent survey reveals that only 72% of employees feel recognized by their managers for good work and only 64% feel they work for an organization that values their contribution. That means there are still over a quarter to a third of employees who feel they are not appreciated or recognized. That’s not good for business and is surprising since recognition and appreciation doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to deliver.

The role of any business or manager must include delivering praise to their employees when demonstrated. It is important for managers and even teams at all levels to do a better job in recognizing good behavior.

TIPS ON HOW TO RECOGNIZE PEOPLE:

  • Timeliness: The shorter time between an individual’s action and when they are given recognition has the most impact. When you see it say it!
  • Personalize It and Be Sincere: Don’t just tell the entire group or team that they did a good job. It can come across like you are just checking a box.
  • Be Specific: Focus on a specific behavior that the person has demonstrated. Generalized statements like, “Good job!” is not sincere or very effective.
  • Frequency: Recognize often and regularly. I never heard of an employee complain that they are recognized too much by their boss.

We all want to feel appreciated and recognized for our efforts, whether it be at work or at home. Take the time, to seek out and appreciate the people around you and do it more often and more effectively. I promise you; it will make you feel good as well, just for saying it to someone. Now that is MAGICAL!
